Related items and newest items

I have jsut noticed Related items and newest items features. I was wondering how are these outputs generated? Is the 'newest items' generated according to category, meta words...? same for 'related items'...

Hi sbouloc, the newest items are items of the same category of the item you're displaying, published after it.
Related items are items with a common meta keywords.
